What approved hardware, charge floors and battery-wear research mean for EV owners in NYC and Long Island.","Automakers are not opposed to vehicle-to-home (V2H) power: GM, Ford, Tesla, Kia and Nissan all sell it in the US. What they restrict is uncontrolled use, through approved-hardware lists, minimum charge levels and grid programs they run themselves. Occasional backup use with approved equipment causes negligible battery wear, while daily grid trading is real wear that the automaker wants to manage and price. For a New York homeowner in 2026, the case for V2H is backup power, not grid income.",[10,15,23,28,33,67,78],{"heading":11,"paragraphs":12},"Automakers sell V2H, on their own terms",[13,14],"A common view among EV owners is that automakers do not want their cars powering homes. The market says otherwise. As of October 2026, GM Energy sells V2H equipment for eligible GM electric trucks and SUVs, Ford supported home backup on the F-150 Lightning, Tesla offers Powershare home backup on the Cybertruck and on newer Model 3 and Model Y vehicles paired with Powerwall 3, Kia supports V2H on the EV9 with the Wallbox Quasar 2, and the Nissan Leaf has supported bidirectional chargers for years.","What these programs have in common is control. Each automaker decides which equipment may discharge the battery, how far the battery may be drawn down and who may send it grid commands. Our position is that the real disagreement is not about whether V2H is allowed. It is about who controls the battery and who collects the revenue when it serves the grid.",{"heading":16,"list":17,"after":21},"Approved hardware only",[18,19,20],"Nissan approved the Fermata Energy FE-15 bidirectional charger (UL 9741 listed) for the Leaf in the US in 2022, and was reported as stating that its use would not affect the Leaf battery warranty.","Hyundai has warned owners in Australia that third-party workarounds enabling discharge otherwise blocked by the vehicle software can damage the car, and that resulting damage is not covered.","GM Energy states that pairing its PowerBank storage product with an inverter it has not approved voids the PowerBank warranty.",[22],"The pattern is consistent. The warranty risk lies in unapproved hardware, not in bidirectional use itself. We have not found published US warranty language that excludes automaker-approved V2H, but warranty booklets change by model year, so confirm the wording in your own booklet before relying on it.",{"heading":24,"paragraphs":25},"Minimum charge levels",[26,27],"Kia stops V2H discharge at 20 percent state of charge, so the battery cannot be drawn below that level. Kia currently supports the 2024 and 2025 EV9, with the 2025 and 2026 EV6 and the 2026 EV9 expected in late 2026. When we checked in October 2026, the Power Recovery Unit needed for blackout backup was listed as not available for purchase, and some states are excluded. Tesla Powershare stops discharging at a minimum level the owner sets in the Tesla app, and Tesla's owner documentation states that damage from letting the battery reach zero percent is not covered by the warranty.","Charge floors protect the battery, but they reduce usable backup energy. On a 100 kWh pack, a 20 percent floor leaves 80 kWh available for the house. This should be part of any backup plan.",{"heading":29,"paragraphs":30},"Who runs the grid program",[31,32],"In February 2026 Tesla launched Powershare Grid Support, an invitation-only vehicle-to-grid program for the Cybertruck in Texas with the utilities CenterPoint and Oncor. It requires the Powershare Gateway and Universal Wall Connector, and Tesla stated that participation through Tesla Electric would not affect the Cybertruck warranty for early participants. On Long Island, ChargeScape, a joint venture of BMW, Ford, Honda and Nissan, began enrolling BMW and Ford drivers in PSEG Long Island's Peak Load Reduction program in July 2025. That program reduces charging during peak hours; it does not export power from the car.","The business logic is straightforward. When the automaker or its partner runs the program, it controls how hard the battery is cycled and can price the wear into the arrangement, so it agrees. When an outside company runs the program, the automaker carries the warranty risk without sharing the revenue, so it declines. Viewed this way, the restrictions are a commercial decision about risk, not a judgment that V2H is harmful.",{"heading":34,"paragraphs":35,"table":37,"after":64},"What the battery research shows",[36],"Claims that V2G either destroys batteries or improves them both draw on real studies. Daily, deep V2G trading causes real wear, comparable to adding driving miles. Shallow grid events managed by the automaker fall in between and are unlikely to be a concern.","An estimate puts this in perspective. A car that travels about 3 miles per kWh covers about 300 miles on 100 kWh. A summer demand-response season of 10 events, each 3 to 4 hours at 7 kW, moves roughly 210 to 280 kWh, which is the battery throughput of about 630 to 840 miles of driving. That is under 1,000 driving-equivalent miles a year. This is our own arithmetic, not a manufacturer figure.",{"heading":68,"paragraphs":69,"list":71,"after":76},"How other markets assign the battery wear",[70],"Markets where bidirectional charging has scaled tend to share one feature: the party that cycles the battery also owns the battery risk.",[72,73,74,75],"China, NIO: under battery-as-a-service, NIO owns the battery pack and the car owner subscribes to it. Its swap stations, 4,178 as of October 13, 2026, can act as grid batteries. In a Jiangsu V2G trial in January 2026, six fourth-generation swap stations delivered a peak of about 1,540 kW. Because the operator owns the packs, it can cycle them for the grid and account for the wear.","China, Shenzhen: in a city-scale V2G test on March 28, 2025, the city paid 4 yuan per kWh discharged, compared with about 0.4 yuan per kWh for off-peak charging. More than 17,000 vehicle sessions at over 760 sites delivered 88 MWh. These were scheduled events, not daily cycling.","United Kingdom: the Octopus Power Pack bundles a leased BYD Dolphin, a Zaptec bidirectional charger and a V2G tariff, with charging included within set limits. The leasing company, not the driver, carries the battery risk.","Japan: V2H has been used for disaster backup since the early Leaf years. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry allocated about 5.5 billion yen from its FY2024 supplementary and FY2025 budgets. For homes it covers half the cost of V2H equipment, up to 500,000 yen, and the installation cost up to 150,000 yen. More than 90 percent of applications in the prior round came from private homes.",[77],"Japan shows that backup V2H at scale works without warranty disputes. With approved hardware, the warranty concern is generally overstated.","Join a vehicle-to-grid program only if your automaker sanctions it, and set a minimum charge level of 20 to 30 percent.","Do not use third-party adapters or software workarounds to enable discharge on a car under warranty.","Do not count on grid income. Check the bidirectional-use wording in the warranty booklet for your model year.",{"q":92,"a":93},"How much does backup V2H wear the battery?","Very little.
