During an outage the hybrid forms the local grid, the microinverters follow it, and when the battery is full the hybrid raises the frequency so that microinverters certified to UL 1741 SA or SB reduce output or disconnect. An owner who wants a larger battery, a different battery brand, or a system designed for later EV integration often looks at an open hybrid inverter instead.","A hybrid inverter combines a battery inverter and a solar inverter. It normally takes panels directly through its own MPPT inputs, where [maximum power point tracking](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_power_point_tracking) adjusts the operating voltage of each string for the most power. When the grid fails, the hybrid opens its internal transfer relay, separating the home from the utility, and supplies the backed-up circuits. The microinverters on its generator or AC-coupling port then see a stable source, pass their own reconnection checks, and resume production. The utility lines remain isolated throughout, so the island is intentional and contained within the home. The [Inverter-based resource](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverter-based_resource) article describes the two control modes in more general terms.","Sol-Ark states that every AC-coupled source must comply with UL 1741, UL 1741 SA or UL 1741 SB, because compliance is what allows the source to treat the Sol-Ark as a grid-forming source and to disconnect when the Sol-Ark curtails it. With the grid present, the hybrid connects its input directly to its output, so the microinverters see the utility grid itself. The Enphase and Victron brief makes the consequence explicit: the microinverters must remain fully compliant with the local grid code and run a compliant grid profile, with an IQ Relay where the grid operator requires one. In New York, the [Standardized Interconnection Requirements](https://dps.ny.gov/nys-standardized-interconnection-requirements-effective-october-1-2026) call for equipment certified to UL 1741 including Supplement SB, with the utility's settings.","The hybrid needs its own profile set correctly as well. Sol-Ark notes that the grid type must be configured before AC coupling is enabled, because it determines anti-islanding behavior and the frequency-shifting limits; an incorrect setting can cause improper control, nuisance shutdowns or noncompliance with utility and safety standards.","The practical point is that the curtailment frequencies chosen for backup operation must sit within what the utility profile permits, and the microinverters should not be moved off the utility profile to make coupling easier. Changing the operating mode of an interconnected system, for example to allow battery export, requires a new application to the utility.","Outside North America the same design runs at 50 Hz. The Enphase brief lists grid codes such as EN 50549-1, VDE-AR-N 4105 and the UK's G98 and G99, with frequency-shift start points of 50.2 to 50.5 Hz and disconnect points of 51.5 to 52.0 Hz, depending on the country.
"Sizing with the Factor 1.0 rule",[62,63],"Victron's [Factor 1.0 rule](https://www.victronenergy.com/live/ac_coupling:start) states that the maximum PV power must be equal to or less than the continuous output power of the inverter/charger at 25 °C. The reason is timing. If a large load switches off while the solar is at full output, the microinverters keep producing until the frequency has risen, and for that interval all of the surplus goes into the battery because there is nowhere else for it to go. With a nearly full battery, the resulting voltage spike can trip the battery inverter or damage equipment.","Victron's examples are a MultiPlus-II 48/3000, rated 2,400 W continuous, which may carry 2,400 W of coupled solar, and a Quattro 48/8000, rated 6,400 W. The figure to use is the lower of the array's peak output and the PV inverters' total rating. The Enphase brief states the rule against the inverter/charger's VA rating instead, allowing up to 8,000 W of microinverters, no more than 21 IQ7A or 27 IQ7+ units, on an 8,000 VA Quattro; Victron's own figure for that model, 6,400 W, is the more conservative limit. The generator (GEN) terminal is its recommended method: it preserves most inverter features, keeps the coupled array running during an outage, and reports its production in the monitoring platform, but it requires a battery. Coupling on the grid side works without a battery and needs external current transformers so that the inverter can measure export, but the coupled array shuts down when the grid fails. Coupling on the load side is not supported.","Two Sol-Ark limits matter in practice. The GEN terminal of its residential models accepts only a 120/240 V split-phase source, so a home on 120/208 V three-phase service must couple on the grid side. And when the system also includes a standby generator, the generator must connect on the grid side, possibly through an automatic transfer switch, because the GEN terminal is occupied by the microinverters; while coupled power is present, the inverter does not accept generator input.","The panel must also accept the hybrid's output. Under the NEC busbar rule in 705.12, often called the [120 percent rule](https://www.greenlancer.com/post/120-rule-for-solar), 125 percent of the inverter's continuous output current plus the main breaker rating may not exceed 120 percent of the busbar rating when the inverter breaker sits at the opposite end of the bus from the main. For a 200 A bus with a 200 A main, that leaves 40 A, which corresponds to a 32 A inverter. Which current counts for a hybrid, including any pass-through, is set by the manufacturer's interconnection guidance and the electrician's design, and the section number differs between NEC editions. This matters for a non-export interconnection agreement.","Off-grid recovery: if the battery shuts down with the grid absent, the microinverters cannot recharge it, because they need a grid formed by the hybrid. Victron requires DC-coupled solar chargers for off-grid and extended-backup systems for this reason, and Sol-Ark does not recommend AC coupling alone as a permanent off-grid design.","Efficiency: stored solar is converted from DC to AC on the roof, back to DC for the battery and to AC again for the loads, so AC coupling loses somewhat more energy than DC coupling.","Older microinverters: units certified only to UL 1741, before Supplement SA, may trip rather than ramp, so the solar cycles on and off. Enphase states that, for use with its IQ Batteries where the utility mandates IEEE 1547-2018, M Series microinverters must be replaced with IQ7, IQ8 or IQ9 units.","Manufacturer position: Enphase publishes a European technical brief, dated May 2023, on coupling its IQ microinverters to Victron battery inverters. We found no current US Enphase document endorsing third-party battery inverters with IQ8, so the microinverter maker's written position and warranty terms should be confirmed before design.","Monitoring: the hybrid and the microinverters report through separate systems.
